As in life, if you look past the muck of Craigslist, sometimes, you can spot a lotus blooming. DSC answered a posting for art installers for the New York International Photo Festival 2010 in DUMBO Brooklyn (May 12th through the 16th). Artists, curators, and volunteers made great connections.  Even Obama was happy about it.

UseRefuse Ballgowns make Time Out NY!

a.jpgaa.jpg

We made our auspicious appearance at The Return of Rococo party July 11th at the request of organizers, Kate & Matt of the great band Coloform. Who wouldn’t want to photograph two women in full makeup and wrapped in colorful plastic on a sweltering July night? TimeOut New York did!

How Does Your Rooftop Garden Glow?

gowns-against-night-sky.jpg

On the rooftop bar of the Empire Hotel, DSC’s Greenhouse Gowns, made from up-cycled plastic and packaging debuted at an event hosted by TheatreMAMA and benefited MillionTrees NYC.  New Yorkers from fashion, advertising, fine art, and design worlds mixed amidst a gorgeous setting sun. Illuminating the night sky with their vibrant costumes, DSC hoped to have inspired all to live a bit greener and more creatively!

UseRefuse Hits Billyburg & Fort Greene

DSC filled in the coloring book of the Brooklyn market scene with it’s usual highlighter-bright style. Weekend appearances included the neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Fort Greene May 8th & 15th. Stay tuned for future market dates and locations!

Save the Arts!

PS 9 in Prospect Heights Brooklyn found a creative way to keep the school’s art department kicking for kids. Artists and craftspeople gathered in the school gymnasium to sell their unique and handmade goods. DSC was happy to “trash up” the place with their fashion and home accessories called the UseRefuse Collection made from up-cycled plastic and packaging. Latisha Daring of Pieces helped to organize the event and get local creatives on board. Last Saturday’s Craft Fair was a perfect example of a community event geared toward enriching the youth through the arts. We should all recognize the transformative power of art!

UseRefuse Messengers

userefuse-men.jpg

UseRefuse introduces the messenger bag and folio as the bridge into unisex accessories. Men, you are the messengers of future generations. Sporting enviro-conscious UseRefuse bags, you can carry more than just your music, artwork, documents, or scrubs. You carry a message of change.  UseRefuse bags use refuse in order to shrink our impact on our growing landfills. Intend to remember, remake, reuse. Please contact designspaceconcept@yahoo.com for information about donating plastic bags and packaging. DSC thanks an insurance agent, art director, doctor and musician for modeling at last weekend’s Prospect Heights Craft Fair.

DSC Rides the Tiger!

2010 Year of the Tiger

Turbulent. Volatile. Fiery. 2010, the Year of the Tiger, some would say might be a difficult year with plenty of socio-political turmoil and sweeping changes. So, how to deal? How to maintain a sense of patience, kindness and peace? Create! Sometimes big changes provide us with an opportunity to re-sculpt our lives by creating harmony and prosperity out of challenging circumstances. Create something out of nothing. Create beauty from chaos. Help others to do the same.

Like our friend Heather. She is a performance artist & educator who  has started an Artist’s Salon & workshop series March 1st through May 2nd to unite and motivate artists to take back the creative spirit of New York. Contact for more information.

We met Heather at Artists & Fleas Market while we were selling our UseRefuse collection. It was refreshing to find many other artists featured in the market rallying together to make lemonade out of lemons. There was a communal hum of generosity while vendors offered  free samples of anything from caramel dip to hand cream. We learned from seasoned vendors other selling frontiers such as etsy.com. Visit our storefront at:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/DesignSpaceConcept

Other great community based organizations that have helped us with our business fundamentals include the Brooklyn Cooperative Federal Credit Union, SCORE and NY Designs.

Networking has never been more important to nourish communal spirit.  Especially in business, we should be each others’ advocates. We hope that the following businesses and individuals can help connect you as much as they have helped us.
